Special thanks to Al Rayyan Hotel (located near Mall of Qatar) for hosting us! They've got this great modern Qatari style decor, and some really cool restaurants too. So check them out!  Al Rayyan Hotel.

You probably noticed that there are these tents that pop up around the country. Some of them are privately set up, some are put up by the country (usually with a public sign), and some are corporate (and for the public).

What's in a name? That which we call a Hamad by any other name would smell as sweet. I think that's the quote... We thought you'd like to know a bit about Arabic names. Typically your full name would be 5 long. Your name, your fathers name, your grand fathers name, your great grand fathers name and then the family or tribe name. Typically you'd want to remember someone three names long. So your name, father's name, family / tribe name.

You probably noticed that older women typically wear a Batoola. It's this gold mask that protects the face. But did you ever wonder why they wear it and why it's shiny gold?

These days it's not as common as before but it's definitely something unique about our culture.

Why do we carry swords? Are you serious? They're awesome! It makes you feel like you've gone back in time and ready to play Ali Baba. But seriously Hamad explains a bit about the history, sword dancing, and how safe they are.

To demonstrate how safe they are, TheQatariGuy slices Mr. Q's arm!!

Don't have a sword? You can still dance, but with your arm.

#QTip: The evolution of the Abaya

#QTip: The evolution of the Abaya

Aisha's back and this time she's talking about the evolution of the Abaya. The Abaya is a unique piece of clothing. This soft and flowing gown is both worn for religious purposes (to be loose fitting) and also as a fashion statement.

Many people agree that that it looks elegant, some say that the colorful ones make women look like Princesses.

Abayas can also vary in price. From as low as 200 riyals (for a good one) to 10,000 Riyals for a luxurious one!
